Speaking science, Oxygen (O2) is a non-metallic chemical element ranked at atomic number eight. It is tasteless, odourless and pale blue in colour. It has been found to be the 3rd most abundant gas in the atmosphere after Nitrogen and Hydrogen. It is produced through the process of photosynthesis whereby living organisms use sunlight as a source of energy to split water molecules and thus form oxygen. The other allotrope is Ozone (O3) which provides protection from ultraviolet radiation at higher altitudes.
Without being presumptuous, one could easily conclude that oxygen is life, and without it, nothing can exist. In human beings, oxygen would be considered useful for optimisation of psychological and physiological processes. Besides, for many years now, it has been used for medical emergencies and for premature, newborn babies to prevent one from falling into a state of shock due to lack of, or low levels of oxygen. This condition is known as hypoxia.
Other than the form of oxygen use mentioned above, there are oxygen bars available for recreational purposes. This is scented oxygen inhaled for recreational benefits and sold by vendors that are easily available. Some of these benefits are psychological relaxation. The final form of oxygen intake is via an oxygen pill. These “magical” pills are small pills taken when one is in conditions that are inhospitable, allow the user to breathe although, they last short periods of time and hence have to be administered regularly.
An Oxygen pill is immensely useful to those travelling to the outer space. It may act as spacesuits for short periods of time when complications arise with their usual breathing systems. It has also come handy for scuba divers who, very often, suffer oxygen toxicity, a condition that may lead to convulsions or death.
There are a few other known uses of oxygen supplements. In considering treatment for chronic illnesses, oxygen has been recommended alongside the conventional medication. Patients with cancer that have undergone this therapy have shown notable improvement as the oxygen molecules inhibit the growth of cancer cells and thus eventually exterminate them.
It has also been established that inhaling larger volumes of oxygen helps in toxin removal. This would be achieved by assisting the lymph system to cleanse itself. This it does by creating a vacuum in the system that pulls the lymph though the bloodstream, thereby increasing the rate at which toxins are removed from the system. This boosts the immune system and allows the body to rid itself of illnesses and thus increase the overall performance of the body. This would be one of the reasons why sports personalities are resorting to sport fitness.
Oxygen has also been used, very effectively, as a colon cleanser. This process is achieved by creating an environment prohibitive for the intestinal tract bacteria that are pathogenic, by releasing oxygen into the colon environment. This, in turn, leads to death and eventual removal of the bacteria that was present. Last but not least would be as a tool for weigh management since the body is allowed to work in optimum conditions. Oxygen would be most vital for the body to function to capacity.
