Oh, Right… It’s Critical To Learning And Memory
What’s the one thing business owners and leaders have to do better than anything else? Well, thinking and deciding are probably right at the top of any list of your “must-haves” if you own your own business or make your living as a leader. You have to keep your mind sharp. What might not be as obvious – it certainly hasn’t been obvious to some of my over-stressed clients – is that your mind’s health depends on your body’s.
Don’t neglect your health! Sure, you’re running a business, and that’s a hectic job. Come to think of it, the term “running a business” seems appropriate – it often feels like you’re running, all the time. But your business depends on your personal energy and vitality, so you have to factor-in the time to focus on keeping yourself healthy, as surely as you would focus on staffing or marketing.
When your body’s in good shape, so will be your mind… and your decision-making ability will be kept in good working order. To make sure you’re at your best, start with the five key daily health habits I call “The NEWSS” – Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sleep, and Supplements. You need to cut the garbage out of your diet, and stay with fresh foods (snack on fruits and vegetables, or occasionally on whole grains). Find a way to hit the gym at least three times a week, and six good workouts a week would be best. Drink two liters of pure water every day, and get eight hours of sleep every night, without fail. And supplement your diet with at least one good multi-nutrient… if you can add others, it’s a cheap and easy way to help your body and to keep yourself sharp.
Some supplements are great for mental function. For instance, make sure your supplements include zinc. Medical researchers have known for five decades that zinc plays a key role in brain function, but weren’t sure until recently how it worked. According to a recent edition of the journal “Neuron,” new research from scientists at the Duke University Medical Center and Massachusetts Institute of Technology has shown that zinc serves as a sort of “traffic cop” in the brain. It regulates the communication between neurons in the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain where learning and memory processes take place. So you definitely want those neurons “talking” to each other, and you definitely want to get your zinc.
Other good brain supplements include L-carnitine, Omega oils, and gingko biloba. Many multi-nutrient supplements contain all these great elements, but if yours doesn’t, they’re easy to come by separately.
Your business, or your mission, needs you. You need your brain. And your brain needs good overall health, as well as help from key nutrients like zinc, to help you get it all done and done well.

People usually associate hair loss with men, but about half of women will experience it by the time they are age fifty. Since this condition is so prevalent in both genders, there have been tremendous advances in all areas of treatment. There are very few permanent solutions to this problem, many that are cosmetic and temporary to boot.
If you have the money, there is a permanent solution that some people opt for which is called hair transplantation treatment. Positive action is absolutely necessary, and really the key to finding the solution.
Regardless of your gender, you should talk to your doctor if you hair is started to fall out. Always check the drain after you have washed your hair to see if excess hair is there. Those that have hair loss may experience this due to thyroid issues and iron deficiencies in their body. Many women may have, at some point in their life, low estrogen levels, not related to menopause, that may cause this to occur.
Of course many women experience thinning hair after menopause due to lower estrogen. Women that lose their rapidly must always see their doctor to find out exactly what is going on. You need to find out why it is happening, and also just to make sure you are healthy and well. There are some instances when patches of hair can fall out in a short period of time. One known reason for this is chronic exposure to stress such as even on the job. I knew a person once that had this problem – his hair fell out in literal patches. There are many unusual situations, like this, which will cause hair to fall out in such a manner. All this person had to do was get out of the situation, and their hair grew back in no time at all. Although at the time he had no idea that his hair loss was due to high and chronic levels of stress. Taking a look at your life from time to time will help you understand what is really happening to you.
When people are desperate, and they want to fix something that is bothering them (like hair loss), a scam artist may be coming their way. Many hair loss treatments, usually based on inaccurate info, have been created and promoted for years. For instance, one of the scams actually wanted people to send their hair samples in for scientific tests. The test, purportedly, would analyze your hair and then tell you the nutrient content that they found in the hair itself. It has been shown that the nutritional supplementation that they recommended would have absolutely no effect on whether your hair would grow or not.
Any person who has hair loss and trying to come to grips with it is going through a lot, emotionally. Losing your hair requires you to make big decisions quickly to help remedy what is happening. Although it is very costly, you could do hair follicle transplants which also work. Even using some chemical sprays have to be done every day and forever. Many young men will simply take out a Bic and shave their head; younger men will have a problem with this particular solution.
Leaky bowels, also known as increased intestinal permeability, happen when the coating of the colon becomes irritated and infected. Your abdominal coating will generally prevent materials from passing through it, but if infected, will not do its job properly. The surfaces of the intestinal tract become permeable or broken. The result of this is that the intestines leak toxins such as fungi, bacteria, fat, waste, parasitic organisms, and partly digested parts of food into the blood vessels.
Due to the body’s defense reaction, food allergies or sensitivities sometimes happen. When your antibodies attack certain food molecules, they look for them to show up once again. After you have taken more of the same food already assaulted by your antibodies, it is recognized as an enemy and attacked again.
Moreover, if a person’s body is constantly creating an auto-immune response, the system rapidly becomes over worked and may exhaust itself. Your colon in fact contains 70 percent of your immune system. This region of the auto-immune system is named G.A.L.T. or gut-associated-lymphatic-tissues. These cells are situated in the coating of the colon and in the abdominal mucous.
Leaky bowel is evident in loads of ways in your system. Those who suffer from Leaky Gut Symptoms frequently grumble skin rashes, bed-wetting, kidney attacks, persistent muscle discomfort and joint pain. A quantity of risky conditions might also happen like pancreatitis, septicemia, milk products intolerance, acne, fibromyalgia syndrome and sometimes even cancer.
Your body’s defense reaction may also be the source of many of the symptoms of Leaky Bowels. You might encounter stomach ache, pain and extreme gas. Once your auto-immune system becomes weary from dealing with these toxins, you may experience reduced digestive function, low energy, fitful sleep, problems focusing and lack of ability to deal with stress.
Once you have discovered that you are suffering from leaky bowels, you are able to complete the steps necessary to beat it. Simply changing your diet is the simplest way to accomplish this. To do this, you must eliminate certain food from your diet for a month – the foods that usually give the nausea.
What to Avoid?
These foods involve peanut, coffee, citrus fruits, bananas, strawberries, foods with yeast, milk products and chocolate. You should also involve oatmeal, spinach, apple, carrots, beets, lettuce, figs and grapes. During the first month, you may want to also involve pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and pine nuts. As it was your diet that created the issues with your colon, it is sensible that a change in your diet will be what works best in mending you.
Altered intestinal permeability continues to be the main cause and fortunately there are several nutrients and herbal remedies present, that helps to decrease swelling of gut. Stress reduction therapies can be very effective in the treatment. It is essential to recover the healthy ecology of gut.
1. Nutrients like glutamine which is essential for production of intestinal mucus, Vitamin A for generation of antibodies, Zinc for development and treatment of epithelial tissue play big part in treatment.
2. Herbs like Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice, Silymarin or milk thistle, Aloe, Slippery Elm are used more commonly an effectively to heal the damaged lining of intestinal wall.
Last week I talked about cereals and how much of a problem they can cause with health. I feel this is down to the high processing and high sugar content of the cereal. Today a topic a lot of people suffer with is cravings and cravings for sugar in particular(how often do we crave a bag of spinach!!). We all get the urge for something sweet, it’s normal, it is 2012 after all! But is there a reason why you may be craving sugar excessively?
To be the best Personal Trainer or Health Care Practitioner requires a lot of things including many hours of learning. We have over the past 2-3 years especially put a huge effort into learning from the very best in the business, by getting certified by them, doing internships, attending seminars from the creme de la creme in world health and fitness, people like Charles Poliquin, Dr Eric Serrano, Dr John Berardi and Phil Richards amongst others. We now have the answers to deal with many health problems which include today’s topic – sugar cravings. A lot of the information is only available to a small number of the elite health and fitness professionals throughout the world and will not always be on a google search.
I find most people who have sugar cravings have three major reasons why they do so:
1. High stress levels are a major problem in Ireland with the number of people out of work at present. If you cannot cope well with the stress of day to day life and your cortisol(the stress hormone) is always high you will opt for comfort foods over health foods – this will lead to you storing fat around your mid section in particular. I aim to talk more on this subject in future blogs and if you would like me to then please comment below.
2. Poor sleeping patterns can wreak havoc on your body. I could talk all day about the benefits of sleep and how important it is for health. You dont feel like having a head of brocoli after a night of uninterrupted or inadequate sleep do you? Its common, and this ties in with point 1 we reach for poor foods during times of stress(bad sleep causes stress). Managing your sleeping problems can be difficult but there are many relaxation techniques, herbal teas and natural supplements that can help you achieve proper sleeping patterns.
3. They overly restrict calories by cutting out nearly all carbs without replacing them and dont understand or have not been told the science of how to deal with such a diet and what nutrients are needed. If you take something away from someone you need to give something back. Following this type of eating pattern can be extremely dangerous if you do not understand the nutrients your body needs to function optimally or when is the best time to eat carbohydrates which when eaten at the right times can be highly beneficial. The problem is the drastic reduction in calories which is not being replaced sends the body into starvation mode. People who follow this type of eating pattern will lose weight initially but most if not all will binge on high sugar foods at some stage and “fall of the wagon completly” and generally stop training for long periods of time. Educating clients as a Personal Trainer is essential and I feel a lot of people are being mis lead by the internet now with a lot of fad diets promising this and that.
This is just 3 of the common problems which I have dealt with in the past that i have found to affect sugar cravings – there are many more causes of sugar cravings but I’m sure if you suffer from them if you address the above 3 your cravings will be much less if not gone. There are a number of other tips and tricks we have picked up from various health professionals. I will list 5 below
1. Get to bed before 11 pm and aim for 8 hours sleep each night
2. Increase Fibre, Veg(Green especially) and Protein intake
3. When a carb craving strikes mix 2-10 grams of glutamine with 10 ounces of organic/heavy cream. This we picked up from Charles Poliquin and has worked well for many clients.
4. Eat or drink something bitter!
5. Take a high quality Fish Oil and Magnesium supplement
No more sugar!!
There is a lot of talk nowadays about this silver solution in the field of medicine, but, it is not actually a solution in the technical sense, but a colloid. Colloidal silver has been popular for its anti-microbial properties. Its’ medical properties consist of:
It can effectively kill bacteria.
The antibacterial properties of colloidal silver have been found in alternative medicine. According to the proponents of colloidal silver therapy, taking 1 teaspoon of colloidal silver every morning and every night strengthens the body’s defenses against bacterial infections. The body’s immune system functions better with an added supply of this particular substance. It can kill harmful bacteria in less than a minute. But, the effects of silver on good bacteria will have to be evaluated.
It prevents fungal infections.
Formulated silver also has anti-fungal properties. Fungi are small microorganisms that thrive in warm, moist places. The human skin is a favorable site for various species of fungi. When they reproduce, fungal infections can develop. However, these viruses are not limited to the skin. There are certain types of fungi that can invade the internal tissues and cause infection manifested by headaches and autoimmune responses. Women with vaginal yeast infection can also use colloidal silver as vaginal wash to treat the infection.
It prevents tumor growth.
Tumor cells are normally destroyed in people with normal immune systems. When the immune system is compromised by an infection or disease, its ability to destroy tumor cells is reduced. This results in the increase in the number of these harmful and invasive cells. A bacterial infection can reduce the immune system’s ability to fight tumor cells. If you will not have the number of tumor cells in your body checked immediately by a doctor, cancer can follow.
By boosting your immune system, your chances of having cancer are lessened. Colloidal silver improves your body’s ability to fight bacteria and viruses, as well as cancer cells. However, the benefits of this matter are not limited to keeping cancer cells from growing. Its benefits also include the elimination of cancer cells. If you have a tumor, you should have at least one ounce of this particular substance a day. It can also be applied on the skin where the tumor mass lies underneath. The effects of this formula are multifaceted, as it can not only target the tumor mass, but it can also act like a body cleanser.
It eliminates viruses.
Many common diseases today are caused by viruses. How many people have not attended to work because of colds or flu? There are no drugs that kill viruses in the body. You cannot take antibiotics for viral infections. But, silver solutions can improve your immunity against viruses. People can increase their body’s defenses against viruses by drinking one teaspoon of these solutions every morning and evening. If you are suffering from colds, for instance, you can inhale nebulized silver.
6 Easy Steps to lose weight
There are so many diets and fitness experts these days it’s hard to know who’s best for you.
What ever you decide to do, it’s important that you are comfortable with it and it has to work with your everyday life.
This is NOT a 6 step diet, but more formula you can use to plan, begin and reach your fat loss goals.
Step 1- You’ve probably already weighed yourself or looked in the mirror and for some reason you are not happy. Either way go and take a two measurements; your weight and waist size. These are important for later on, because you need to know how much fat you are losing. Decide how much of that ‘fat’ you want to lose and by when. Set clear achievable targets and steps towards your BIG goal. MOST important BELIEVE in yourself that you can reach your goal!
Step 2- Have a powerful enough reason to lose it. Are you getting married? Are you going on Holiday? Do you want to feel more confident? etc Have a good think about this, because when it does get tough (and it will), this will be a powerful reason for you to overcome any challenges….. I remember a friend of mine was getting married and she desperately wanted to lose weight for her wedding. So she spelt out the word ‘FAT’ with magnetic letters on her fridge. It worked for her and she looked great on her wedding day!
Step 3- Commit yourself and take action today. Do some research, speak to an expert (experts are probably not your friends and family unless they work in the industry), get some advice from your Doctor, sign up to a course or group. If you sign up to anything, remember we are all going to tell you how great our program is. I was looking around primary schools recently for my son who will be starting school next year. The best advice I was given was ‘treat it like you are buying a house’. This is also true, if you are going to sign up to a program. Go and visit the place and speak with the instructors/coaches etc Do you like them? Are they genuine? Do they listen to what you want and offer a solution? If a coach understands you and cares they can help you make a real difference. Also if you are signing up to anything, remember you will be spending one to three hours of your time here each week. Ask about some of the success stories they’ve had recently! (the 20 people who lost weight in 1999 sounds great, but what about the members who recently got started).
Step 4- It’s very important to review your progress weekly. If you are exercising then make sure you measure your waist. You will more than likely gain muscle weight through exercise, which is heavier than fat. So a waist measurement will really help you to see what is happening. One of my members said he was able to tell the difference when he went he had to tighten up his belt! The great thing about losing fat is the all the shopping you get to do for new clothes at a later date.
Step 5- If your weight loss targets are not being hit, be honest and ask yourself why? Have you been consistent? Have you really given it a good go? If you can honestly say that you have, then will you need to change your approach. A client who recently joined lost 10 ilbs in just two weeks, I later found out she had previously attend a ladies gym where she took part in circuits. In the 6 months she was there she had only lost 3 ilbs. Luckily she change her training or she may not have hit her target in time for her wedding. If something is not working you will need to keep changing your approach until you start to see results.
Step 6- Get a coach. Friends and family are great, but they can also lead you into temptation or in some cases be not very encouraging at all. Your best coach is you, but it is good to have someone who will listen to your goals, urge you and direct you when you need it. Having a coach will also make you accountable to someone. This way you are sure to hit your goals.
So there you have it, personally I recommend regular exercise and a stable diet, and not crash course dieting. Above all choose an exercise you know you are going to enjoy.
Detox is one of the most feared parts of recovery from addiction or alcoholism without real justification. Movies, books and television shows have dramatized the process of detoxification to the point that people who really need help have hesitated or remained quiet due to their fears concerning detox. However, detox is different for everyone and in some cases may only last for a few days. Some people have mild symptoms and some have more severe symptoms, but the acute stage of detox rarely lasts longer than 2 weeks. During this time the entire process can be medically and psychiatrically managed, and in fact many recovering addicts or alcoholics can be made quite comfortable.
You should never attempt to detox from any drug or alcohol on your own. While detoxing from opiates such as heroin or Oxycontin a person can experience extremely uncomfortable and even painful symptoms, but if detoxing from alcohol, these symptoms can be much more dangerous. For this reason, detox should always occur in a professional medical setting. Medications can be administered to mitigate these risks and make the process far more comfortable and safe.
Detox is unavoidable when a person who is physically dependent on a substance suddenly stops using it. This is because the body has made changes in the central nervous system in order to cope with the constant presence of drugs or alcohol. These changes were so severe and persisted for so long that they become semi-permanent. The body literally becomes dependent on the substance in order to function normally. When the drug or alcohol is suddenly withheld from the system, the body essentially goes into shock as it works frantically to restore equilibrium. This can cause misfiring in the brain and other CNS components that can lead to an entire host of symptoms. Physical symptoms include:
Nausea and vomiting
Sweating/ night sweats and fever
Weight loss due to loss of appetite
In severe cases of alcoholism or barbiturate addiction, seizures, heart attack and hallucinations can occur. Some people will experience delirium tremens, which can be very dangerous in a non-medical environment.
Emotional and mental symptoms include:
Depression, often combined with suicidal thoughts or ideations that require monitoring
Social isolation or impairment
Anxiety – just the thought of not using the drug or alcohol anymore can make a person exceedingly anxious
By seeking treatment for drug addiction or alcoholism at a professional medical facility these symptoms can be readily managed in a clean and safe environment. Medications are administered to counter unpleasant side effects and reduce the anxiety and stress associated with detox. Supervision is provided to ensure safety and addiction specialists can help to talk through difficult feelings or emotions experienced during the detox process.
Detox almost always lasts less than two weeks, but that’s just the beginning of the recovery process. Detox allows a person to be free from the effects of drugs and alcohol so that real treatment can begin- usually in the form of a residential inpatient substance abuse program, a partial hospitalization program or an intensive outpatient program.
If you or someone you care about needs help with detox or any step of the addiction process, then please do not hesitate- call or email our Florida drug rehab center now. If you’ve already detoxed and are ready to take action, then please use the links below for our true residential inpatient treatment program.
