Clinical Research Organisations During the Recession - Frost Report on CRO's

We may wonder what is to become of the contact research organisation (CRO) industry while the economy slowly recovers from the recent recession but according to a recent report carried out by Frost & Sullivan, the CRO industry will continue to grow. During this current climate, biotech and pharma companies are less likely to rely on or invest in internal abilities to carry out their clinical trials. However, somebody has to do them...

The report has also warned that the "US CRO Markets-Key Therapeutic Areas" anticipate that struggling pharma and biotech companies will fail to meet the costs for trials currently underway. But this is not likely to be a lasting occurrence, suggests the report.

Senior industry analyst for Frost and Sullivan, Barath Shankar Subramanian revealed that the annual revenue growth for CROs has decreased from the 14-15% range to 10% this past year.

Although, this is not all bad news - Subramanian claims that the industry's annual revenues will double from now until the year 2015, growing from a current 12.91 billion to $22.87 billion in the years to come. This, he says, will be due to sponsor firms increasingly adopting tactical partnerships with smaller services firms or CROs. "After 10 years of talking about such relationships, CROs and pharma companies are beginning to forge them," he says.

Subramanian uses the immense Eli Lilly/Covance partnership as an example, which came in to effect in August last year, where Covance has outsourced $1.6 billion worth of drug development business to Lilly over the next 10 years.

"That's the flavor of the season," Subramanian says. "We're seeing some new models being explored when previously it was purely transactional, with CROs taking a wait and watch attitude toward strategic partnerships."

In addition, partnerships with CROs enable small sponsors more time within the research cycle to investigate promising molecules. Beginner biotech and pharma firms used to out-license their Phase I or Phase II; which resulted in a large amount of ambiguity for the future of the research study. In this day and age, conversely, more and more start-up firms are able to keep products in the pipeline for a longer period of time which in turn brings them closer to the market and this is due to the cost-effectiveness made possible by CROs. This is an optimistic outcome for the sponsor and the CRO.

Dangerous Chemicals in Swine Flu Vaccinations - MSG and Mercury in H1N1 Vaccine

The CDC strongly recommends that all members of the population receive the swine flu vaccine, particularly pregnant women and any children age 6 months and up, as well as anyone who cares for these high risk groups. Consumers, however, are leery of the swine flu vaccine, due to a complete lack of testing. In order to understand the potential risks behind getting the H1N1 vaccine, consumers can read the package insert for each formulation.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides package insert information for all four formulations of the H1N1 vaccine. The adults-only vaccine made by CSL Limited, the vaccine made by Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited, which is approved for ages 4 and up, the vaccine made by Sanofi Pasteur, Inc., which is approved for infants ages 6 months and up, and the intranasal vaccine, approved for toddlers age 2 and up, were all approved in September, 2009.

All safety and dosage information used for the H1N1 vaccine package insert is based on historical information about the seasonal influenza vaccine, but ingredient information is accurate. Among other ingredients, different formulations of the swine flu vaccine contain cancer-causing agents, mercury, and MSG. While most single-dose formulations of the H1N1 vaccine are mercury-free, the single-dose vials produced by Novartis do contain trace amounts of thimerosal. Most of the thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, is removed by a purification process, but small amounts remain after processing.

Before making a choice about getting the swine flu vaccine, consumers should research, and get all the facts about the H1N1 vaccine.

The Complexity of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Systemic lupus erythematosus is a life-threatening chronic autoimmune disease. Although the mortality rate of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus has reduced in the last decades, the disease continues to raise serious problems to the affected persons. Research results reveal that around 2 million people in the United States suffer from systemic lupus erythematosus and almost 90 percent of patients are females.

The disease has the highest incidence in young women with ages between 18 and 30 years old. Asian, Hispanic and African American women are more exposed to developing systemic lupus erythematosus than white women. In Asian and African countries, the incidence of the disease in women is known to be a lot higher than in the United States. Furthermore, Asian and African American women seem to develop more serious forms of the disease. Systemic lupus erythematosus is also common in infants, very young children and elderly people.

Modern medicine is unable to establish the actual causes of systemic lupus erythematosus. It is believed that there are multiple inter-related factors that determine the occurrence of the disease: genetic anomalies, environmental factors (prolonged medical treatments with strong antibiotics) and hormonal factors (since the disease is predominant in women, estrogen seems to be involved in the occurrence of the disease).

Systemic lupus erythematosus can affect different parts of the body, sometimes even causing permanent damage. Lupus involves dysfunctions or hyperactivity of the immune system, which begins to attack healthy blood cells and genetic material. Instead of protecting the body from infectious agents and malign organisms, the immune system produces antinuclear antibodies that attack the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Systemic lupus erythematosus can affect the cardiovascular system, the lungs, the gastrointestinal tract, the kidneys, the nervous system and brain, the musculoskeletal system or skin. People with systemic lupus erythematosus commonly suffer from affections of the joints, heart disease, pulmonary disease or skin diseases. Considering the multitude of generated symptoms, people with systemic lupus erythematosus require various medical treatments for each particular disorder.

The treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus is mainly targeted at reducing the damage caused by the dysfunctional immune system to the body. Immunosuppressive medications are very common in the treatment for lupus. Although they can generate pronounced side-effect, corticosteroids are often used in the treatment of systemic lupus erythemaosus. However, doctors are trying to minimize the use of harmful drugs such as azathioprine (Imuran) and cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan).

The chronic character of systemic lupus erythematosus determines the recurrence of its symptoms. The disease has an unpredictable evolution pattern, alternating between periods of remission and periods of aggravation. Even if systemic lupus erythematosus is inactive, the patients still require permanent monitoring and frequent physical examination. Also, due to prolonged treatments with immunosuppressive medications, patients with systemic lupus erythematosus are very susceptible to infections. People with systemic lupus erythematosus need to take steps in preventing the occurrence of infectious diseases, as on the background of a compromised immune system, even a common flu can generate exacerbated symptoms.
