Common Drugs Used For Asthma
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
Drugs used for asthma can be divided broadly into two categories: Drugs that relieve the muscle spasm in the wind pipe (bronchodilators) Beta agonists: These drugs are very useful to relieve the symptoms of asthma. There are two types in this category short acting and long acting beta agonists. Short acting drugs (salbutamol, terbutaline) will be effective only for a short time and is useful in those who get occasional symptoms. Long acting beta agonists (salmeterol, Formeterol) are effective for more than 12 hours. If taken 12 hourly, these drugs are found to be effectively controlling symptoms in those patients who suffer from persistent severe symptoms. Theophyllines: Theophyllines are used sometimes in those patients who could not get relief of symptoms by using long acting beta agonists. They have potential side effects even with a small excess of medication dose. Unfortunately factors like viral infection, smoking, oral contraceptive pills and many other drugs could change the concentration of this drug in the blood causing severe side effects. This drug should be taken only under strict medical supervision. Anticholinergics: Doctor may try a medication called ipratropium bromide (atrovent) in some patients who gets chest tightness due to emotion, stress or exposure to cold air. Drugs that prevent inflammation. Corticosteroids: This drug is normally used as either using inhaler (betamethasone) or as tablets (prednisolone). Steroid inhalers are used for long term treatment of asthma. They effectively prevent asthma. Side effects due to regular use of Steroid inhalers are minimal as they contain only small amount of drug. Several studies has shown the side effects while using steroid inhalers occurs if the dose exceeds 400 mcg in children and 800 mcg in adults. Most important side effect is development of oral thrush. If you use a dry powder form of steroid inhaler, you can prevent the oral thrush by rinsing your mouth after you have taken the medicine. Corticosteroid tablets have a definite place in acute episode of asthma not controlled by inhalers. Normally a 5 day course of high dose oral steroid will be given (prednisolone). With this short therapy, side effects are minimal compared to long term steroid tablets. In some patients where none of the medication is helping, doctor might try long term steroid tablets. But taking long term steroids may give many side effects and should be taken only under expert supervision. The common side effects are easy bruising, water retention, high blood pressure, muscle weakness, diabetes, osteoporosis etc Cromones (Sodium chromglycate): This drug may be used sometimes in combination with other drugs. By combining this drug, your doctor may able to reduce the dose of other medications like steroid inhalers. Leukotriene antagonists (Montelukast and zafirlukast): These drugs are useful as add on treatment for those patients whose symptoms are not adequately controlled even after taking short acting beta agonists and steroid inhalers. But using this drug alone without other inhalers may not give adequate benefit. Methotrexate: In some patient where common drugs are not helping, drugs like methotrexate could be used to reduce the severity of the asthma. Patient who is taking this medication would be normally under the supervision of an expert in asthma and would get regular blood tests. Others: Human body produces antibodies (a type of protein) in response to any foreign protein that enters inside. These foreign proteins are either bugs like bacteria, virus or they may be allergens. These antibodies attach themselves to the receptors of two types of specialized cells (basophiles and mast cells) and make these cells to release some chemicals which lead to swelling and inflammation. Scientists have successfully developed a special monoclonal antibodies (antibodies produced in the laboratory by a single clone of cells) called Omalizumb. This medication has a tendency to prevent the normal antibodies attaching to the specialised cells thus preventing inflammation. Unfortunately this drug is helpful only in certain cases of asthma. Also its use is somewhat limited due to side effects like anaphylactic reaction, erythema and pain at the injection site and risk of some parasitic infection. |

Diabetes Symptoms
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is a metabolism disorder taking place due to a combination of environmental and hereditary reasons. And the result of it is unusually high levels of sugar in the blood. The blood sugar levels in our bodies are balanced by an interaction of multiple chemicals and hormones, including the insulin hormone, which found in the pancreas. As a result of some defect in the action of insulin or problem in insulin secretion the blood sugar level increases. Hyperglycemia occurs that leads to the acute signs of diabetes like too much urine production, thirst and increased fluid intake, blurred vision, mysterious weight loss, lethargy and changes in energy metabolism. The symptoms of diabetes occur gradually and are hard to identify initially. These may include a sick feeling, fatigue, excessive thirst and frequent urination, especially at night. Since the body has extra glucose in the blood, it tries to get rid of it through urine. This fluid loss leads to a feeling of thirst. Among the other symptoms are blurred vision, sudden weight loss, genital itching and slow healing of gum, skin and urinary tract infections. Since blood sugar is not something that one can see, the side effects are the signs that are considered by the doctors. Seeing the symptoms, the blood sugar level of the body is tested and accordingly, diabetes is diagnosed. Doctors often suspect diabetes if the patient develops certain health problems that are related to diabetes. Heart disease, changes in vision, numbness in the feet and legs or slow-healing sores prompt a doctor to check for diabetes. These symptoms do not necessarily mean diabetes but anyone having any of these problems needs to consult a doctor as a preventive measure. Once the diabetes gets treated, the symptoms diminish. Polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (excessive thirst) and polyphagia (hunger and weight loss) are the classic symptoms of diabetes. A dry mouth, aches and pains, fatigue, unusual infections, blurred vision, dry skin and slow healing of wounds are the other signs. But one needs to remember that not everybody will show all of these symptoms. It is better to test one's blood sugar level if any one of these symptoms occurs. Sometimes, there can be absolutely no symptoms and yet, one can have diabetes. In diabetes type 1, the pancreas stops producing insulin due to some viral attack or autoimmune response. In the absence of insulin, body cells don't get the required amount of glucose for producing Adenosin Triphosphate or ATP units. This results in the symptom of nausea and vomiting. Gradually, the body starts breaking down the muscle tissue and fat for producing energy leading to weight loss. Due to electrolyte disturbance dehydration can also occur. Advanced stages of diabetes can lead to coma and death. In case of diabetes type 2, the body builds up a resistance to insulin. Due to the failure of the cells to metabolise glucose, fat deposited in the body is metabolised to gain energy. The body undergoes negative calorie effect and feels fatigue. When the glucose concentration in the blood rise, the brain receives signal for diluting it. Hyperosmolar hyperglycemia nonketotic syndrome results as body fluid is pulled out of tissues together with eye lenses. |

Options For the Autistic
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
As soon as a child is diagnosed with autism, families, particularly parents will surely be bombarded with research that centers on 'recovery' or 'cure.' For the majority, this has become the focus of their efforts. As time passes most families view the absence of a cure as equivalent to a tragedy. There is good news though. It is highly possible to mend and improve the quality of life for those with autism including their families through a carefully designed support for positive, constructive behavior. Let us establish a vision first. What do we aim to achieve? What is considered as a meaningful life for people with autism? With adequate support, families aim to promote independence to their loved one who is autistic. As children, it's ideal for them to go on with their daily routines at home, parents are educated as to how to substitute problem behaviors to socially accepted ones. As soon as these children become adults, they should be able to live in their own home, with housemates of their choice. They should be able to get a job that matches their skills and interests. While not all people with autism can accomplish and experience these positive outcomes, a great number will attain some or even most. With these in mind, families should be more hopeful about the future, knowing that the absence of a cure does not mean the absence of a great life. How can we overcome obstacles? One of the best approaches that is worth looking into is that it must be home and community based. Enhancing the quality of life needs an approach that deals with behavior concerns in normal situations at home, workplace, school, and community. Let's take into consideration a simple academic skill like learning to name colors. You might say that this may not have much impact to the family life but in fact, it will benefit the child in many ways. Take him to the intersection. You can teach that green means look both ways and if there's no traffic, cross the road. Red means "don't move!" This manner of teaching encourages not only independence in adults, but safety, and a sense of confidence in his parents' minds. The same holds true for problem behavior. The goal of the family should be to reduce the level of frustration to weaken the need for problem behavior. They can be taught how to effectively communicate their needs or frustrations. You can also reach out for emotional support to your respective communities. Finally, a new complete autism resource that goes into depth about ALL treatment options for autism, natural AND medical. Includes a mountain of information concisely written by a Doctor with a PhD and professional medical researcher to cover all the important topics such as symptoms, all treatments, training and teaching information for parents, teachers, and caregivers. Treatments and training becomes less effective as the child ages, so do your family a favor and check out the ultimate autism guide at Autism Symptoms. |

Cerebral Palsy and the Small Victories
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
Celebrate cerebral palsy and the small victories. No, it does not mean anyone is ever happy that he/she, or a loved one, has permanent brain damage. It simply means to be glad for every accomplishment toward independence, no matter how small. For example, if you have a child with CP, he/she may never walk. However, learning to use the control on an electric wheelchair can provide some autonomy. It might be the not-so-simple act of buttoning a shirt. People without brain injury take so many things for granted. Yet, this seemingly small act should be considered a large victory. No, it is not fair that you or someone you love has cerebral palsy. But, no one ever said life was fair. It does no good to grouse about all the things that cannot be done. However, it is quite a different matter to celebrate new accomplishments, regardless of how small. Living Aids As with any other child, a parent should have the goal to help a child reach his/her full potential in self-care, independence, and adaptive skills. Kids without special needs generally reach standardized benchmarks of growth and development in an expected period of time. The big difference between a child with cerebral palsy and a "normal kid" is the inability to achieve expected abilities at the appropriate time-if ever. Thankfully, a plethora of living aids have been developed to help children and adults with cerebral palsy live as independently as possible, under the circumstances. If you or your child is mildly or moderately affected by CP, independence may not be an unreasonable expectation. For example, this short list of living aids may enable you or your loved one to eventually have a home and normal daily independence. - Bathroom handrails
- Shower chair
- Bed rails
- Lifting chair
- Kitchen gadgets
- Wheelchair
- Crutches
- And the list goes on, and on, and on. . .
Have you ever heard the expression: "Necessity is the mother of invention?" In other words, if you cannot do a necessary activity to be more independent one way, figure out another, and use those aids. For example, if you cannot reach the upper kitchen cupboards, you can find pieces of furniture that will store your dishes and food. A pie safe is great for food supplies. A movable island can hold dishes and provide a place to prepare meals for those who may be confined to a wheelchair. Likewise, dressing aids are available to help someone with cerebral palsy be able to get dressed independently. So many aids are now available to help the disabled live independently, if at all possible. However, it is a lot easier to begin raising a child with special needs with the end goal of possible independent living. If you are always doing things for a child with special needs, or if you allow others to do things you can learn to do for yourself, neither is a favor. Even if it takes 10 times longer, at first, and is frustratingly difficult, the goal of achieving any independence is worth the effort. Then, you can celebrate cerebral palsy and the small victories. With his partner Hulet, Mike started Rehabmart in 1998 while practicing as Occupational Therapists. As therapists, we discovered that our patients did not always have access to high quality medical products and equipment. We decided to do something about this and began to make products and valuable information available online. |

Two Simple to Identify and Treat - Infant Asthma
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
Asthma affects children between the ages of 5 and 12 but can start at infancy. Estimates differ, but between 10 percent and 20 percent of children below the age of 18 are believed to be asthmatic. The disease is hard to diagnose in infancy. Generally the only symptoms are a persistent cough at night that may subside during the day. Alternatively, the cough may be intermittent throughout the 24 hours. Wheezing is also common with infants, but this does not necessarily point towards asthma. Usually wheezing is the result of a viral respiratory infection to which infants are particularly vulnerable. Another possible symptom might be difficult and rapid breathing. The baby should be closely observed to see if the symptoms follow any pattern. The disease is more likely to develop in a baby with a family history of asthma and allergies. It is a chronic lung disease that makes the airways swell up, tighten and produce an excess of mucus. As it is difficult to diagnose in an infant, many doctors prefer to err on the right side and treat a persistent respiratory condition as asthma. This is to preclude damage to the lungs that might result from uncontrolled and persistent asthma. The early use of anti-inflammatory medication generally prevents this. Here are two simple tips to identify and treat infant asthma: 1. If a cough persists even after the cold subsides, suspect asthma. Observe the symptoms to see if there is a pattern when the cough is at its peak and whether there is any indication of heavy or labored breathing. 2. Follow the medication prescribed by the health care provider. Also ensure the infant is protected from dust, noxious odors, cigarette smoke, pets and anything else that might act as an irritant and trigger an asthmatic attack. |
