My husband and I didn’t want to have kids for the first 5 years of our marriage. I tried various types of contraceptive pills but the nausea and food cravings I got when taking the pill was not worth it. My gynecologist then recommended I get an IUD.

I won’t go into details about what this IUD is or what it is not because you can find out more details online, but I am going to tell you about some of the side effects and experiences I had with using it.

My gynecologist inserted it and I will admit that it was a bit uncomfortable. So be prepared to feel discomfort. Have you ever had a pap smear? It feels a bit like that. The process is really quick and within five minutes the insertion was finished. My gynecologist recommended I buy some pain killers because some women experience cramps and discomfort in the lower back and womb area after insertion. I was one of those women.

For about two weeks I was uncomfortable. It felt like my period pains were never going to end. It wasn’t a very nice time and I often took pain killers to relieve the pain and muscle cramps. During this time I also experienced spotting and occasional bleeding. I didn’t have intercourse during this time and my husband understood because I was just too uncomfortable.

After two weeks the pain eased up and I felt normal again. I didn’t ever feel nauseous and I didn’t ever crave unhealthy food. Life just carried on as normal.

My first period was normal. I still experienced that premenstrual moodiness and bloating. My second period was lighter and within six months my period had almost stopped. It was amazing! No more heavy bleeding, endless pad changes and cleaning sheets when it was that time of the month. It was blissful. Any woman, who experiences heavy bleeding, will be so relieved after a few months of using this IUD. I did still get premenstrual tension but I didn’t experience the usual pain and discomfort that comes in your first day or two of having a period.

I really recommend you trying this IUD. It’s called the Mirena. If you don’t want to have children for the next five years. Of course you can have the device removed at any time but it’s cost-effective for long term contraception. The price of Mirena is equivalent to 18 months use of the pill. As soon as my husband and I stop having children, I will go back to the Mirena as my choice of birth control. I would not choose anything else having experienced this luxury of having no period for five years. Please make sure you speak with your gynecologist or family doctor and be well informed before getting the Mirena inserted. In my experience, it is the best form of birth control on the market.
