IUD Birth Control – My Experience

My husband and I didn’t want to have kids for the first 5 years of our marriage. I tried various types of contraceptive pills but the nausea and food cravings I got when taking the pill was not worth it. My gynecologist then recommended I get an IUD.

I won’t go into details about what this IUD is or what it is not because you can find out more details online, but I am going to tell you about some of the side effects and experiences I had with using it.

My gynecologist inserted it and I will admit that it was a bit uncomfortable. So be prepared to feel discomfort. Have you ever had a pap smear? It feels a bit like that. The process is really quick and within five minutes the insertion was finished. My gynecologist recommended I buy some pain killers because some women experience cramps and discomfort in the lower back and womb area after insertion. I was one of those women.

For about two weeks I was uncomfortable. It felt like my period pains were never going to end. It wasn’t a very nice time and I often took pain killers to relieve the pain and muscle cramps. During this time I also experienced spotting and occasional bleeding. I didn’t have intercourse during this time and my husband understood because I was just too uncomfortable.

After two weeks the pain eased up and I felt normal again. I didn’t ever feel nauseous and I didn’t ever crave unhealthy food. Life just carried on as normal.

My first period was normal. I still experienced that premenstrual moodiness and bloating. My second period was lighter and within six months my period had almost stopped. It was amazing! No more heavy bleeding, endless pad changes and cleaning sheets when it was that time of the month. It was blissful. Any woman, who experiences heavy bleeding, will be so relieved after a few months of using this IUD. I did still get premenstrual tension but I didn’t experience the usual pain and discomfort that comes in your first day or two of having a period.

I really recommend you trying this IUD. It’s called the Mirena. If you don’t want to have children for the next five years. Of course you can have the device removed at any time but it’s cost-effective for long term contraception. The price of Mirena is equivalent to 18 months use of the pill. As soon as my husband and I stop having children, I will go back to the Mirena as my choice of birth control. I would not choose anything else having experienced this luxury of having no period for five years. Please make sure you speak with your gynecologist or family doctor and be well informed before getting the Mirena inserted. In my experience, it is the best form of birth control on the market.

Natural Remedies

With the plethora of pharmacological products on the market today, one could be forgiven for thinking that they are a panacea for all illnesses. However, this is largely hype as Western medicines, for the most part, suppress and mask symptoms. They don’t reach the root of the problems.

This also applies to the many artificial vitamin products you are confronted with every time you go into mainstream pharmacists or even health food stores, which should know better. Very often these vitamins can’t be absorbed directly and need a medium to allow them to work effectively.

However, you will be pleased to know that all is not lost. Nature has provided a remedy for all ailments, most notably in the form of herbs. Herbs are the dried parts of various plants including shrubs, trees, flowers and ferns.

Containing many powerful natural ingredients, they actually aid the body to heal itself. The body is equipped with a self-regulating system which will keep the organism is a state of balanced health. However, you do need to de-toxify first.

All herbs contain one or more active ingredient such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes and essential oils. Naturally non-toxic, herbs can be taken singly, or in combination. It is especially this non-toxicity which makes them safe and effective to use to treat many different conditions and ailments.

Herbs have a gentle, but deep-reaching affect on the body. Rather than suppressing symptoms, as Western medicines do, herbs restore the natural balance of the body. They tone the body’s organs and glands, supplying the body with many vitamins and nutrients. This process helps the body to rid itself of the harmful toxic accumulations built up through a lifetime of wrong living. Once free of impurities, the body can begin to regain its natural strength, which allows our natural internal healing processes to begin to restore the body’s natural level of equilibrium.

However, though non-toxic, herbs are very powerful and it is advisable to consult a qualified herbal practitioner before embarking on a course of treatment. The Chinese are still practitioners of herbal medicine, try consulting one of their admirable pharmacists or herbalists.

Herbs are but one of several natural remedies. Homeopathy is another admirable discipline, which is extremely efficacious. The homoeopathists gradually distil their remedies in a style reminiscent of alchemists. The final product is virtually impossible to see, but extremely powerful and effective.

Naturopathy is another natural remedy, but dispenses with virtually all medicines, preferring to use the power of psychology to work its effects.

Last, but not least is a natural fruit diet, which, by the natural enzymes present in the fruit, de-toxifies whilst still providing the body with many necessary vitamins. One of the most important vitamins which need to be refreshed daily, especially if you smoke or drink coffee, is vitamin C. Citric fruits are an excellent course of vitamin C. Fruit juices, especially, those produced naturally, can be one of the main components of a fruit diet.

Alternative Health

The first thing to take to heart regarding alternative health is that it demands total commitment. It’s not a mere hobby or dilettante past-time; it will entail a change of lifestyle, attitude and diet, if it is to have any lasting effect.

The fact that 70% of the Western world, in particular, is clinically overweight is largely due to diet and lack of exercise. An increase in sedentary occupations, especially in Australia and the gradual movement away from rural occupations, which involved healthy exercise whilst working, has radically reduced fitness. Unfortunately, these sedentary workers don’t involve themselves in compensatory fitness regimens, preferring to adopt the lifestyle of “couch potatoes”, spending their leisure time in front of the TV or propping up bars.

So the first step is to take regular exercise, walking or swimming are the easiest. It doesn’t necessitate joining a gym and, anyway, gym-based exercise is not tremendously beneficial, the emphasis being on muscle building. For those really wishing to pursue alternative health conscientiously, the more exacting disciplines of Hatha yoga and T’ai Chi will provide the most benefit.

These two disciplines, in particular, are based on the concept of circulation of the natural life energy, variously termed Chi or prana. One of the first obstacles to changing to an alternative health lifestyle is the inertia of the body, which has grown addicted to junk food and a sedentary leisure. However, both yoga and T’ai Chi work a subtle psychological alchemy which will automatically make one refrain from eating additive-rich junk food. The disciplines also free blocks in the system, allowing energy flow and making one yearn to be more energetic and active.

Changing to an alternative health lifestyle also means stopping ingesting toxins from tobacco or alcohol. This doesn’t necessarily mean completely giving up alcohol, but it does mean radically cutting down.

Diet-wise, one of the biggest killers is refined foods, especially white flour and the white sugar. People are under the misapprehension that sugar gives energy. This is true as regards natural fructose and glucose, but white sugar takes more energy to process than it gives. White flour, likewise, has had all its goodness removed in the refining process. It’s far better to eat brown flour with the husks still present. This applies to bread, particularly. Whole-wheat brown bread is vastly superior to white bread. Brown rice is even more nutritious, being less glutinous than wheat.

Likewise, spurn additives in food. Scrutinise the labels to make sure there are as few chemical additives as possible. A meat-based diet is also detrimental. Vegetarianism is the best policy, but failing that, switch to white meat like pork, or even better, fish. Eat dairy products sparingly, cut down on eggs, eat soya-based margarine instead of butter and eat less cheese.

Most of all eat plenty of fresh fruit and raw food salads. Drinking lots of natural fruit juices is also highly beneficial, being vitamin rich. Go natural if you want to live a healthy, wholesome life.

Herbs

For those wishing to adopt a natural lifestyle in particular, herbs are nature’s own remedy. They are not merely used for improving the favour of food, even though this is one of their most popular uses. Such herbs as marjoram, mint, rosemary and thyme stimulate the appetite, add zest to food, enhance its taste and are extolled by top chefs, the world over. However, they are, in reality, medicines and, as such, are one of the finest natural cures. However, as natural medicines, they can be very powerful, so use them sparingly and do research or seek advice regarding their use.

Herbs have traditionally been recognized as being among the most powerful medicines known. They have been extensively used by shamans, natural healers and wise-women from all cultures, since the dawn of time. They were also used in the classical cultures of antiquity including China, Sumer, Assyria, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Pliny the Elder, in the 1st century AD, wrote extensively on the efficacy and healing powers of herbs in the treatment of virtually every known illness. Herbs were frequently employed in the preparation of sacred oils and unguents and also as aphrodisiacs. They were also used in religious rituals, in worship, incantations and magical rites.

The medieval era saw an increased culinary use of herbs, but with the growth of Western medicine their medical use gradually declined. Even more so as the pharmacological monopolies became prominent and sought to discourage their use in favour of their own, often inferior products.

Herbs’ efficacy has not waned over the ages, however and we can still benefit considerably from their use. This is especially so as the majority wake up to the often detrimental effects of intrusive surgery and the pill-pushing mania of Western medical practitioners. Innovative individuals are increasingly prepared to take responsibility for their own welfare and seek to resurrect the ancient tried and tested natural alternative remedies. They are becoming aware that herbs will allow the maintenance and restoration of health, even faced with serious or long-term illness.

Herbs are the dried parts of various plants including shrubs, trees, flowers and ferns. They invariably contain many powerful ingredients that can actually promote the body’s self-healing mechanisms. They all contain one or more active ingredient like vitamins, minerals, enzymes and essential oils. Naturally non-toxic, herbs can be taken singly, or in combination with other herbs. It is precisely this non-toxicity which makes them safe and effective to use as antidotes for a multitude of conditions and ailments.

Herbs have a mild, but profound affect on the body. Rather than suppressing symptoms, as Western medicines do, herbs restore the body’s natural balance. They tone the body’s organs and glands, to supply the body with vitamins and nutrients, thus aiding the body to eliminate harmful toxins, which have accumulated through a lifetime of eating the wrong food. Once free of impurities, the body begins to regain its natural strength and allows our natural internal healing processes to begin to restore homeostasis or natural equilibrium. Herbs are indeed nature’s gift.
