Brain Injuries and Motivation
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
During the first year after my partner sustained his brain injury, life was a roller coaster ride. By the end of that first year, although his confused periods became fewer and his moods improved little by little, I gradually became more aware of his deficits. A brain injury is a hidden disability affecting a person in a way that will sometimes make them appear, to others, to be lazy. This apparent laziness is the result of lack of motivation. Those with frontal lobe damage very often experience this deficit along with the accompanying inability to plan ahead. They sometimes also exhibit poor judgment. For this reason, lack of motivation can be a major concern for family members. My partner, following his brain injury, had no real interest in doing anything. For most of his days he sat on the couch and dozed off and on, occasionally playing a game of solitaire. He was bored. When I made suggestions of what he could do, he had no desire to try them. I recalled when one of my children was ten months old, he had no desire to learn to crawl. Being easy-going and placid, he was content to sit and watch the world from his blanket on the floor. But he was attracted to the budgies in their cage. One day I placed the birds in their cage on the floor, set him in 'crawl mode' and he was off. I considered how I could translate this knowledge into something that would work with my partner. One thing I realized was that desire had to be the motivating factor. Being a strong believer in 'lists', I made up a list of things he had previously enjoyed doing. By having several tasks written down, he now had choices. It was a checklist with a beginning and an end when he was able to cross off the completed task. The result was a feeling of accomplishment. The list idea did help somewhat with his lack of motivation. This is a big step for those with a lack of motivation deficit. Their efforts should be supported and encouraged. And if things don't go well, stay calm, don't overreact and remember to take one day at a time. They are baby steps towards recovery. Most people suffering from brain injuries are unaware, (at least in the initial stages, if ever), of their deficits. As one neurologist said, 'How do you get someone to work on a problem they don't believe they have nor care about?' |

Blood Pressure Diets - What Are the Best Foods?
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
For the millions of Americans battling with hypertension, finding high blood pressure diets is a key part of getting their BP back to normal. The aim of this article is to introduce some of the more common foods that have been shown to help. The key minerals to keep in mind while planning high blood pressure diets are potassium, calcium and sodium. Potassium and calcium are good, sodium is one we'd like to lessen. Sodium can come in many forms in food, but mostly appears as salt. So when eating meals, try and lessen the amount of salt you add. While going out for a meal, explain that you are hypertensive to your server and ask for less salt. Any good restaurant will be happy to oblige. Bananas, beans, tofu and potatoes are all very rich in potassium, however while making meals try and avoid boiling any of these foods. Potassium can seep out into the water during the boiling stage, so it is best to steam or bake. For calcium, drink a good portion of low fat milk. Low fat dairy products are best when trying to control blood pressure and get a good dose of your daily calcium needs. In addition to these minerals supplements can also be taken to in conjunction with high blood pressure diets. One of the most popular ones is garlic, because garlic contains a chemical called allicin which has been clinically proven to lower blood pressure. Diet is only one aspect that you need to take into consideration when trying to manage high blood pressure. There are many other things such as exercise and other co-factors that can help eliminate hypertension and get you back to being healthy. |

Social Skills and Autism
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
| utism is disorder that effects brain development. It is commonly characterized by repetitive behaviors like counting and stacking. It also tends to impair social skills and the ability to communicate with others. The signs of autism can be detected in very young children, even under the age of three. It affects six out of every thousand people and is four times as likely to affect boys as girls. Many more cases of autism are reported today compared with twenty years ago, but it is not clear whether it is becoming more common or if reporting is increasing with better understanding of the disorder. Autism affects the brain in ways that are not completely understood. If parents notice symptoms early enough then behavioral intervention can help children develop social skills, but there is no way to cure them of disorder. One sign of autism is a child that does not smile or pay attention to other people. They are less likely to make eye contact and are much more likely to communicate by grabbing a parent's hand. Autistic children will not often mimic or even respond to different expressions or emotions, a common way that children learn basic social skills. Most autism sufferers will not be capable of living on their own as adults, although a small number are able to live independently. The major social skill that autistic people lack is the ability to understand the intentions of other people. This is a skill that most of us take for granted. For a person with autism, being among people, even people they have known all their life, is like being among an alien race. They are not able to understand any of the non-verbal communication that makes up such a large part of human interaction. Autism can be displayed in different levels of severity. More than a third of autism sufferers do not develop speech skills enough to be fully functional. This stunted development can be tracked from the first year of life when autistic children babble less than other children. They may also exhibit unusual gestures and vocal patterns and fail to coordinate their vocal patterns with those of the caregiver. As children get older, they are less likely to make requests or share their experiences, both signs of a lack of connection with other people. Highly functional autistic people can have excellent vocabularies and spelling and be very well spoken. But they still have trouble with complicated language tasks like reading comprehension or inferences. Concepts like sarcasm are totally lost on them. In fact it would be difficult to even explain the concept to an autistic person in a way that they could understand. There are treatments available for autism, none of which can provide a cure. Their focus instead is to improve the quality of life for the autistic person and their family. There is no consensus on the best methods as every case seems to be different, but some systematic treatment is better than none. With me, an autistic person can gain a certain level of functional independence and learn to approximate basic social skills. |

Why Modern Children Are So Sick
$BlogItemUrl$>
|
| During the last 20 years, there were numerous medical publications about various chronic diseases present in very young children. We had clinical cases of infants, 4-8 months old, who had severe asthma and were given cortisol. Other publications revealed that children, 2-4 years old, developed cancer, malignant forms of heart disease, and other chronic conditions with very low life expectancy. Such cases were not known to medical science 30-50 years ago. In order to understand the reasons of this epidemic of pediatric diseases, we have to realize that all chronic conditions have one feature in common: low body oxygenation. It is always present in cancer, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, and many other disorders. In order measure oxygenation of the child, one can gently the nose of the child and observe how long it would take before the child opens their mouth to breathe. Typical breath holding time of young children (up to 5-7 years old) is around 5 seconds. Such children usually breathe through the mouth and this is another definite factor of poor health. Healthy children can easily hold their breath up to 40-60 seconds. They can have long dives under water and this is another indicator of poor body oxygenation. Low body oxygenation is produced due to chronic over-breathing. Normally, breathing of sick children is audible and visible. Doctor Buteyko, a leading Soviet physiologist, trained about 200 medical professionals how to apply breathing retraining therapy in order to increase oxygenation of tissues and treat chronic conditions. These doctors revealed that chronic diseases quickly disappeared when body oxygenation is about 40-60 seconds. Many of his doctors were paediatricians. They found that the following factors cause poor health in modern children; 1) Women hyperventilate during pregnancy without noticing it and this is as dangerous for the health of the fetus as smoking or drinking alcohol. 2) Many hospitals do not use swaddling anymore. If a child is not swaddled until the time when they can exercise, then this child develops over-breathing. 3) Mouth breathing, as mentioned above, is another factor. 4) As it was noticed by Dr. Lapa, who was practising the Buteyko breathing method in Russia for children: "The most serious damaging factors leading to uncontrollable growth of the depth of breathing are over- feeding of kids, over-heating and a lack of physical activity. Children's development depends greatly on their environment. The smaller they are, the bigger the dependency. That is why they often copy a character, views, habits of their parents, including their attitude to health. If mother and father do nothing to improve their health, any attempts to do something for children in this respect are taken by them as unjust and a constraint. The best encouraging motivation for kids is an example from parents, a competition with them. That means rehabilitation must be a family business." |
